The importance of training your Superyacht crew

Oct 9, 2018

Yachting is far more regulated than it used to be which makes it a great time to get into the industry through gaining qualifications. Since 2011, the phase-in period for legislation on standards of competence (STCW[1]) is in place. Training crews is mandatory.

The STCW is designed to cover over one million seafarers working on all types of vessels worldwide. It’s a good thing too, because a well-trained crew operates safely and is more aware of the raft of legal requirements in force today. First changed in 1995 and then 2011, the competency aspects led to the creation of impressive training qualifications designed for experienced hands too, with diplomas in Superyacht Management and Superyacht Operations available to captains, associated industry and senior crew looking to improve their practice and strengthen their knowledge of ship and shore-based support roles.

Beginner Superyacht qualifications

For those applying for their first position on a superyacht, the days of getting those jobs without qualifications are at an end. Superyachts have particular requirements of their crews and there’s technical information which can be learned in short starter courses such as Professional Superyacht deckhand. Other useful short courses, if you are wanting to move from insurance and risk assessment for example, into the superyacht industry, include surveying yacht and small craft engines and Maritime emergency preparation & response.

If you’re new to yachting or a really experienced superyacht supercrew member it’s a good idea to get training to update your skills in light of emerging technologies used on superyachts. A diploma in Superyacht Project Management: refit and newbuilding contains essential training for anyone involved in this. The diploma in Boatyard and Marine Operations provides an excellent working knowledge for anyone working in the yard.
