This International Women’s Day, we are proud to highlight the incredible journey of Jennifer Malone, Vice President of US Operations at MYS Worldwide Yacht Services. From growing up in the maritime hub of English Harbour, Antigua, to forging her own path in the industry, Jennifer shares her experiences, challenges, and advice for the next generation of women in maritime.
A Journey Back to the Maritime World
“I serve as the VP of Operations at MYS USA, South & Central America, and the Caribbean. My career path wasn’t traditional. Growing up in English Harbour, Antigua, my mom provided provisioning services to many yachts visiting the island. I liked the idea of providing excellent service.
Gradually, I became disappointed with the industry and decided to stray. After many years of teaching, my husband, a maritime surveyor, encouraged me to assist him, reigniting my passion for the industry. This marked the beginning of my journey back into the maritime world.”
A Lifelong Connection to the Industry
“More than being inspired to pursue a career in this industry, I was born into it. Again, being born in English Harbour, Antigua, one of the major industry destinations, I was exposed to daily operations within the industry through my mother’s provisioning service and the close proximity to captains & crew, managers, and owners. It was natural for me to grow in this environment and develop strong relationships within the industry.”
The Most Rewarding Moments
“Some of the most rewarding moments in my career include successfully accomplishing the seemingly impossible, seeing our clients happy and satisfied, and watching my team grow in confidence. Each of these achievements reinforces my commitment to excellence.”
Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Maritime
“As a Black woman in the maritime industry, I’ve faced challenges such as gender bias and skepticism. Being talked down to was not uncommon. To overcome these obstacles, I focused on growing my skill set, leading by example, and treating everyone with dignity. Slowly but surely, this approach helped shift perceptions and earned respect.”
The Future of Women in the Industry
“I believe the maritime sector is changing. More women are proving themselves, and the industry is increasingly pushing for gender equality and diversity. While the process is gradual, I am proud to be part of these transformative times.”
Advice for Women Looking to Join the Maritime Sector
“Believe in yourself and your abilities. Don’t be afraid of challenges or tough times. Seek mentorship and build a supportive network of peers. Your voice is important—use it.”
