  1. What is your current role and how have you progressed to it? 

Initially my role was Head of Sales; I’ve been in sales and marketing for so long now – always in the luxury industry – from Automotive, working with Bentley & McLaren, to real estate. I have also worked with Gulf Craft, Majesty and Sunreef Yachts. In my current role, as time has progressed I have been involved with pretty much all aspects of the business, from hiring to production.

  1. Why did you choose to study the Yacht Brokerage diploma?

It just made sense. I have really wanted to do this course for a long time. For many reasons – one which I must say was my ego! I just felt good doing it and it just gave me so much more knowledge and understanding of what a Yacht Broker does. Not everyone has this diploma and I always like to stand out and be different and this definitely did that for me. I just wanted that Diploma under my belt; I think especially as a women, it made me feel great! Plus it’s not just any diploma , it’s from MTA where there’s a prestige to it.

  1. What were your course highlights?

This was a challenging course! There’s a whole lot of information and different aspects to learn so don’t think it will be a breeze just because you’re paying for it! It will push you – I wasn’t quite sure I’d pass the exam, but I did! You have to be committed and dedicated. The whole thing for me was a highlight really. And telling people I was studying it was also a great feeling- knowledge is everything.

  1. How do you feel this course has helped your career and progression?

It has definitely helped! It has given me a step up as I said not many have this and I feel that especially being a women in this industry, it gives you an element of respect and shows you know what you’re talking about. Learning always helps and I’m already staring my new course with MTA, keep learning, that’s what will make you stand out from the crowd. Primarily, respect.

  1. Why have you chosen to enrol on the Superyacht Operations course?

I just love learning and I love the industry. I’m like a sponge and this is what I need and want to progress, plus how many can say they have done this Diploma??? I want to better myself and what better way.

  1. What top tips would you give to future students?

Be committed and dedicated. Don’t assume you’ll pass with little effort. Be ready to study, the exam was tough, it’s not a simple yes or no, but an essay. But when you do pass, what an amazing feeling! And you can add initials to your business card!

  1. What is your current role and how did you progress to it? 

My current role at The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) is Technical Assistant in the Inspections and Surveys Department. I began my journey in the Registration Department and spent 7 years there but was always really keen to know more about the Technical Department, where I was transferred to in 2011.

 

  1. Why did you choose to do the Port State Control Certificate?

I used to enter the Port State Control Inspection reports in our system, recording the report for the respective vessel and the findings of the PSC inspection. In my thirst to learn, I asked questions, and my boss suggested that I might wish to have a look at doing some training which was PSC related. After looking at several courses, I decided on the Port State Control Certificate course offered by the Maritime Training Academy.

 

  1. What were your course highlights?
  • Receiving the email messages, with feedback from the course tutor, from the Student Liaison Administrator, who was always very encouraging!
  • Receiving grades which made me feel such a sense of accomplishment
  • Completing the assignments was very rewarding

 

  1. What were your biggest challenges studying and how did you overcome these?

My biggest challenges were personal, family occurrences which interfered with my concentration and focus, as well as my lack of self confidence. I knew if I did not complete the course, I would end up feeling like a failure, and this pushed me to keep going with my studies. I was able to keep going thanks to the very kind and the empathetic team who encouraged me throughout the course.

 

  1. How do you think this course will benefit you and your company? 

Equipped with my newly acquired learning, I have grown in confidence and have become more involved with Port State related matters at work. As a result, my department and the company benefits from me being able to assist in this area of work.

 

  1. What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying?

My advice to anyone who may be thinking of studying is simply to say, go for it! You will not regret it! There is an amazing team at the Maritime Training Academy, who will assist you every step of the way, they are professionals who are committed to seeing you succeed. They did it for me and I am confident they will do it for anyone who wishes to embark on any of the courses that are offered.

I decided to study Yacht Brokerage due to my longstanding interest in this area and my aspiration to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in yacht transactions.
