1. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what drew you to the yacht brokerage industry?

I am a computer engineer but never too passioned about IT. On the other hand I always loved the sea and yachts. I owned a Dufour 31 and also met a friend working as a charter manager in Monaco, after she explained about the industry and her role and really wanted to try myself and work there.

2. How did the MTA course prepare you for your role as a Junior Broker?

It gave me a super useful overview of the industry, the different factors, it helped me learn a lot of technical aspects of yachts, regulations etc. But most important, with each assessment I had to put myself in the shoes of a broker and verified how excited I was about it.

3. What were your course highlights?

To be honest, I believe the entire course was a highlight. Every part of it contributed to my knowledge and development. The moment you complete it, you realise you’ve done something meaningful — not just for your career, but for your personal growth too. It’s a great feeling knowing that you’re doing something good for both your present and your future.

4. Was there a particular part of the course that you found especially useful or impactful?

My advice is simple: just do it! The Academy is extremely professional, the team is friendly, and the support you receive is excellent. The tutors are highly experienced and have an impressive level of expertise. You’ll be in very good hands.

7. What does a typical day look like for you as a Junior Broker?

Every day is really different. I am just starting but, I am taking care of managing leads as they come, visit yachts in different events, attending networking events, verify the yachts we have listed…

8. How do you feel the skills you learned in the course are helping you in your day-to-day work?

It gave me an overview and a basis of the industry. Also I am reviewing some of the content depending on the needs I can have or questions I may have.

9. What advice would you give someone considering a career in yacht brokerage?

Taking a course to gain some knowledge before entering the industry is great and very valuable, but try to get a job in the industry as soon as possible afterwards to gain real experience.

10. Would you recommend the MTA course to someone looking to break into the industry, and if so, why?

Yes, definitely. I enjoyed a lot the content and the exercises, it was very useful and interesting and well structured. Also I really appreciated how approachable was the MTA team, always willing to help with any questions. As someone new to the industry, their guidance was especially valuable. 1. Why did you decide to study the Technical Ship Management Diploma?

I decided to study the Technical Ship Management Diploma because I wanted to get a deeper insight into the work involved within a shipping company. To be more specific, I started an internship in a shipping company’s technical department during the summer vacation between university semesters, and my manager recommended that I should take up this Diploma in order to better understand the function and the duties of the department.

2. What were your course highlights?

Something that really stood out in this Diploma was the fact that the courses combine a wide range of knowledge from different areas. Although I am a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering student and I loved the modules that were technically oriented, I also liked the courses that concerned legal and financial considerations.

3. How do you think this course will help you in your career?

My primary career goal right now is to work as a Technical Superintendent Engineer in a shipping company. With that in mind, the knowledge I gained from this course will help me achieve this goal more easily, as I will have a better understanding of the work done within a shipping company. Although the university prepares us to become Marine Engineers, it does not give us enough insight about the work that we will be called to undertake when working in a shipping company. This Diploma came in handy as it helped bridge this knowledge gap.

4. Why did you decide to enrol on another course (Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Diploma) with us?

I decided to enrol on the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Diploma because I wanted to deepen my knowledge concerning more technical matters. Also, I always thought shipbuilding is an interesting and fascinating process.

5. Do you have any advice for future students?

I would advise future students to not rush when writing their assignments and to take their time when doing so. When completing an assignment patiently and carefully, the answer written tends to remain in your memory more effectively and for a longer period. That will significantly help to absorb the knowledge offered by the modules.

I’m currently working as Master of a container vessel. It’s a challenging but rewarding position that has given me extensive experience at sea over the years.

I already hold a Diploma as a Port State Control Officer (PSCO), and I wanted to build on that foundation. 1. What did you hope to achieve by studying this course and has it met your expectations?

​I did not have any academic background in this field. My knowledge came mainly from being a sailor in the Optimist and 420 classes, but knowing how to trim a sail is not the same as knowing how to manage a marina, its infrastructure, and how to structure a development plan. This course gave me exactly that broader perspective and has fully met my expectations

2. Which module did you enjoy the most and why?

Module 9 – Business Planning & Marketing. It allowed me to bring together all previous knowledge and apply it to real strategic decisions at my club, giving me a roadmap for future improvements.

1. What is your current role and how did you progress to it? 

My current role at The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) is Technical Assistant in the Inspections and Surveys Department. I began my journey in the Registration Department and spent 7 years there but was always really keen to know more about the Technical Department, where I was transferred to in 2011.

2. Why did you choose to do the Port State Control Certificate?

I used to enter the Port State Control Inspection reports in our system, recording the report for the respective vessel and the findings of the PSC inspection. In my thirst to learn, I asked questions, and my boss suggested that I might wish to have a look at doing some training which was PSC related. After looking at several courses, I decided on the Port State Control Certificate course offered by the Maritime Training Academy.

3. What were your course highlights?

• Receiving the email messages, with feedback from the course tutor, from the Student Liaison Administrator, who was always very encouraging!
• Receiving grades which made me feel such a sense of accomplishment
• Completing the assignments was very rewarding

4. What were your biggest challenges studying and how did you overcome these?

My biggest challenges were personal, family occurrences which interfered with my concentration and focus, as well as my lack of self confidence. I knew if I did not complete the course, I would end up feeling like a failure, and this pushed me to keep going with my studies. I was able to keep going thanks to the very kind and the empathetic team who encouraged me throughout the course.

5. How do you think this course will benefit you and your company? 

Equipped with my newly acquired learning, I have grown in confidence and have become more involved with Port State related matters at work. As a result, my department and the company benefits from me being able to assist in this area of work.

1. What is your current role and how have you progressed to it? 

Initially my role was Head of Sales; I’ve been in sales and marketing for so long now – always in the luxury industry – from Automotive, working with Bentley & McLaren, to real estate. I have also worked with Gulf Craft, Majesty and Sunreef Yachts. In my current role, as time has progressed I have been involved with pretty much all aspects of the business, from hiring to production.

2. Why did you choose to study the Yacht Brokerage diploma?

It just made sense. I have really wanted to do this course for a long time. For many reasons – one which I must say was my ego! I just felt good doing it and it just gave me so much more knowledge and understanding of what a Yacht Broker does. Not everyone has this diploma and I always like to stand out and be different and this definitely did that for me. I just wanted that Diploma under my belt; I think especially as a women, it made me feel great! Plus it’s not just any diploma , it’s from MTA where there’s a prestige to it.

3. What were your course highlights?

This was a challenging course! There’s a whole lot of information and different aspects to learn so don’t think it will be a breeze just because you’re paying for it! It will push you – I wasn’t quite sure I’d pass the exam, but I did! You have to be committed and dedicated. The whole thing for me was a highlight really. And telling people I was studying it was also a great feeling- knowledge is everything.

4. How do you feel this course has helped your career and progression?

It has definitely helped! It has given me a step up as I said not many have this and I feel that especially being a women in this industry, it gives you an element of respect and shows you know what you’re talking about. Learning always helps and I’m already staring my new course with MTA, keep learning, that’s what will make you stand out from the crowd. Primarily, respect.

5. Why have you chosen to enrol on the Superyacht Operations course?

I just love learning and I love the industry. I’m like a sponge and this is what I need and want to progress, plus how many can say they have done this Diploma??? I want to better myself and what better way.

Be committed and dedicated. Don’t assume you’ll pass with little effort. Be ready to study, the exam was tough, it’s not a simple yes or no, but an essay. But when you do pass, what an amazing feeling! And you can add initials to your business card!
