At Maritime Training Academy, we take pride in supporting professionals in advancing their careers in the maritime industry. Patricio is a shining example of this dedication. Having previously completed our Diploma in Marine Salvage and Diploma in Shipbuilding & Ship Repair, he recently undertook our short course in Surveying Yacht & Small Craft Systems, achieving an impressive 100%.

We spoke with Patricio about his experience with MTA:

You’ve studied a diploma with us and recently completed the short course in Surveying Yacht & Small Craft Systems – what first motivated you to choose Maritime Training Academy for your training?
“I chose MTA, under the University of Portsmouth, because it represents the highest academic standard I have encountered in my professional career. The programme offers technical excellence, highly experienced instructors, well-structured study material, and access to extensive reference resources. This allowed me to complement my professional background with solid and updated academic foundations, specifically focused on yachts and small craft, which have very different requirements compared to merchant vessels.”

How did you find the learning experience and support throughout your studies with MTA?
“The learning experience was outstanding. The material is carefully written, based on real case studies, and encourages in-depth technical analysis rather than superficial reading. The instructors and academic support team provided constant assistance, always efficient and precise in resolving queries, which gave me confidence throughout the process. Each module contributed rigorous and practical insights into yacht surveying – an area where attention to every component is critical, as these vessels are custom-built for their owners.”

In what ways have these qualifications helped you in your career or opened up new opportunities?
“These qualifications have strengthened my professional standing with yacht owners, shipyards, and classification societies, giving me a more comprehensive technical perspective when surveying yachts and small craft. Unlike a merchant vessel, a yacht requires a different level of precision: it is a pleasure craft where the owner must have complete confidence in being able to sail worldwide, fully assured of the vessel’s true condition and the reliability of its systems. In this context, safety and reliability often depend on attention to the smallest details, because it is precisely there where potential failures – and their prevention – reside. This approach has opened new opportunities in inspection, technical consultancy, and certification, where credibility and accuracy are fundamental.”

Would you recommend Maritime Training Academy to other professionals in the industry, and if so, why?
“Yes, without hesitation. MTA offers a unique balance of academic excellence and practical application, with highly competent instructors, extensive reference material, and outstanding academic support. It is not only about acquiring knowledge, but about gaining tools directly applicable to yacht surveying – an area where rigorous technical evaluation of every system makes the difference, and where the owner’s confidence depends on the surveyor’s attention to detail.”

Huge congratulations to Patricio for completing his third course with us! His journey shows how MTA’s industry-focused training helps maritime professionals gain the skills and confidence to excel in specialised areas in the maritime industry.
